2022 at Sound Pop Academy

2022 at Sound Pop Academy

Christmas is just a few days away and Sound Pop Academy is officially finished for 2022! We’ve had an amazing year at Sound Pop Academy so let’s look back at our some of our favourite moments from the last twelve months.

Performances ????

In February, we did our first performance of the calendar year at Westquay Shopping Centre in Southampton. Our members performed to hundreds of shoppers, singing songs from artists like Ariana Grande and Sam Smith.

Since then, we’ve performed at amazing venues across Southampton like at the ABP Southampton Marathon, at MAST Mayflower Studios and most recently at the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Markets.

One of the highlights of our year has to be our Summer Theatre Show. In July, our Sound Pop Academy and Little Sound Pop Academy members took to the stage at Thornden Hall in Chandler’s Ford, performing all the songs we learnt during the 2021-2022 year. They did an absolutely incredible job, putting on a really professional show, and we were so proud of them all! Check out the video below:

Holiday Activities ☀️

Over the school holidays, the fun didn’t stop. In August, we ran singing and dancing workshops across the city as part of Southampton City Council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme. As part of our work with HAF, we also ran a Music Video Recording Project at MAST Mayflower Studios. We spent a day with some brilliant young people, learning harmonies and choreography, recording vocals and performing to the camera. You can watch the music video here.

For our members, we also hosted a summer social event. At Sound Pop Academy, we are really passionate about providing a place for young people to not only grow as performers but to make friends and create amazing memories. This year, our summer social was at High Score, a video arcade, in Southampton. Members had the chance to play arcade games with each other and all had a fantastic time!

Over the course of 2022, we’ve also run lots of half-term workshops with themes ranging from Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande to Frozen and Encanto. We have loved meeting young people from across Southampton to sing, dance and play games. Our Encanto workshops were particularly popular with hundreds of children and families joining us to experience the magic of the Madrigal family.

Sessions ????

Since September, sessions have been back in full swing! We’ve started learning new songs by artists like BTS and Billie Eilish, had our spooktacular Halloween sessions, where our members dressed to impress for our Halloween catwalks, and this week, we had our Christmas sessions.

We also hosted our first-ever Little Sound Pop Academy ‘Showbacks’. Little Sound Pop Academy, our group for 6-8-year-olds, is all about building confidence and developing performance skills. We came up with the idea of organising ‘Showbacks’ to give our youngest members experience of performing in a safe and supportive environment. This week, we invited members’ families to watch them perform the songs they’ve learnt this term. They have been working so hard since September and our Showback sessions were an amazing celebration of this!

Child Friendly Southampton ????????

And finally, this week, we were really proud to be named a ‘Child Friendly Ambassador’ by Southampton City Council. This means we have been recognised as a business that puts children’s rights at the centre of everything we do and inspires others to make Southampton a place where children and young people can thrive.
