WHAT IS VOCALKIT?
A fresh, diverse & contemporary look at bringing singing into educational settings.
VocalKit is a collaborative project between two Resident Companies at MAST Mayflower Studios; Sound Pop Academy (the South’s Leading Pop Academy) and Southampton & IOW Music Hub, (a growing partnership of local, regional and national organisations, delivering the new National Plan for Music Education).
Singing is a starting point for the music curriculum, alongside co-curricular support (vocal/instrumental lessons & performances).
Our aim is to bring a supportive platform to teachers, regardless of their musical background, to ensure they are confidently and successfully implementing singing in the school day. Not only developing the musical skill set of students, but also using this skill as a pillar for their social and emotional well-being.

Providing not only singing resources to both Primary, Secondary & SEND settings, VocalKit will also support both music leads and classroom teachers in Networking, Training & CPD to allow teachers to feel confident in delivering high quality & dynamic sessions, alongside their busy schedules.
WHAT IS VOCALKIT?
National Plan for Music Education, the National Curriculum & co-curricular support.
Following the arrival of the new National Plan for Music Education in September 2023, we carried out some market research across schools across the South Coast region (primary, secondary & SEND settings) in March 2023.
The results identified the main areas of needs schools require to successfully implement the National Plan for Music Education, which was primarily for teachers to have additional support with the following;
- In-person & online networking / training / CPD
- Resources for Primary & Secondary Vocal Groups
- Singing Assembly Resources
There are 7 key features which have been highlighted in the new National Plan for Music Education that all schools are advised by the DfE to ensure are present in their curriculum & co-curricular practise from September 2023. The Vocal Kit supports 3 of these key features.

SINGING IS KEY
“Singing is key to developing musicianship and will be a core part of the curriculum offer at primary. It is already a strength of many primary schools.
In addition to dedicated curriculum singing time, some schools find that incorporating short bursts of singing into every school day works well. Assemblies also offer an opportunity to sing, as a whole school or in year groups, and to perform as a class or ensemble. Regular singing prior to and continued during instrumental teaching can support its success.
Teachers should consider how pupils can progress their singing beyond the classroom, within and outside school”
