We love the environment here at Sound Pop Academy and every year we organise some type of community work where members and the general public can get come together and do something awesome for the planet!
This year we hosted a clean-up on Southampton Common as part as the Keep Britain Tidy initiative, #GBSpringClean. The Great British Spring Clean looks for communities to come together and clean-up their local parks, towns and beaches.
On Sunday 7 April, we had 30 amazing people come together from all across Southampton and as a team, we collected 47 bags of rubbish in just an hour and a half from around the Common. Incredible achievement, although very sombre and upsetting to know there is that much litter laying on the ground in one of our public parks.
As well as filling bags, other peculiar items were also found… parasols, tents, bags of clothes, a child’s bicycle, cool bags and even a kettle!
It was an inspiring morning and great fun too and we can’t wait to organise next years clean-up.
Huge thanks to Southampton City Council for supplying us with litter grabbers, rubbish bags and bag hoops and for meeting us to collect all of the rubbish once we had finished our collection.
Some cool stats from across the country…
💚 There were 17,097 clean-ups
💚 957,377 bags of litter collected (around 39% will be recycled)
💚 A total of 1.1 million hours were spent litter picking
Proof that together we can make a big difference!
We run incredible public workshops throughout the year for young people aged 5-17! Tickets for our public workshops tend to go quickly, so be sure to keep checking back for new events if we’re sold out.
