Singing and Performance Workshops with Sam Bailey

Singing and Performance Workshops with Sam Bailey

At the end of March, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Sam Bailey to Sound Pop Academy! Sam came to our Eastleigh Academy home, The Point, to run very special two singing and performance workshops for us.

We were so excited for the X Factor winner to come and visit. Sam has just finished playing Mrs Potts in Disney’s UK tour of Beauty and the Beast – The Musical and previously supported Beyoncé on the UK leg of her Mrs. Carter Show world tour. She’s phenomenally talented so we were very thankful to Sam for giving us her time.

These intimate workshops were an amazing opportunity for members and non-members to come and improve their performance skills. And we had a really incredible day!

Both groups on the day worked on ’A Million Dreams’ from the film, The Greatest Showman. ????

The session started with everyone introducing themselves and getting warmed up. And then it was time to get started on learning the lyrics to ‘A Million Dreams’. Sam told our members that when she’s learning a song, she likes to write out the lyrics. So that’s exactly what we did! Our workshop attendees worked in pairs or small groups to write down the lyrics to the song, helping them gain confidence with the words they’d be singing.

Next up, we spent some time thinking about how to perform a song, rather than just singing it! Sam talked about how important it is to really try and understand what you’re singing about. This means you can share the emotions you’re feeling with your audience and make your performance really memorable. Our groups looked at the lyrics to ‘A Million Dreams’ to work out the different emotions they could show throughout the song.

The final stage of the workshop was putting everything we’d learnt into practice. In small groups, our participants took turns performing ‘A Million Dreams’. Sam gave our participants some AMAZING feedback on how to sing and perform more confidently including using the space, rather than standing still, and ‘un-glueing’ your arms from your side. ????

Finally, we had time for a Q&A session with Sam, asking her about her experience on the X Factor, her favourite songs to sing, and what she’s up to next. What an experience!
